The Crystal Serenity has now been cleared by Immigration & Customs
said the voice over the ships intercom system. (March 2011)
We quickly gathered the required sightseeing accessories like head cover,
camera’s etc. and not to forget the required bottles of water. All equipped
we headed for deck four, which was today the passageway, showing our
ships I.D. cards and……… down the gangplank.
Haggling with some taxi drivers about the price to bring us outside the
harbor gate and into the town, we finally settled with one.
Within minutes we were in downtown Colombo, the “Pettah’ neighborhood
famous for its open air bazaars and markets.
We walked some main and side streets and came to the railway station,
while standing on the main platform a train came rolling in, unloaded its
human cargo of people, going with the stream we were outside the building
and continued on our route.
We turned into York street the most famous of all the main roads.
Being that it was so hot 43 degrees, the humidity a mere 86% we decided
to return to the ship, by now we were dripping wet from perspiration.
The down town area, full with old buses and smoking little scooters, some
converted into taxi’s, traffic which buzzes all around, buses sounding their
horns, loud strange music emanating from little stores or stands in the area.
We made it back to our ship, had a refreshing shower and went for lunch.
In the afternoon we preferred to stay on board next to the air-
conditioning.
