Singapore
Flight LY 081 left in time, we received an upgrade to business class as
frequent fliers and had the pleasure to sleep most of the time of this 10½
hours flight.
Landing in Bangkok we were able to stretch our legs as we had to walk quite
a distance to the gate for the Singapore stretch of the continuation flight.
Boarding Thai Airlines was a bit hectic as this giant jumbo resembling more
of an overloaded commuter bus filled up to the last seat.
It was another 2¼ hours ride until we landed in Singapore.
Retrieving our luggage, passing customs, exchanging some money and taking
a taxi to our prearranged "Four Seasons Hotel" closed out the day.
Next morning we had a late start, as we were still under the influence of
the jet lag.  Breakfast was served at the “Coffee Bean” on Orchard Road.
We were able to pay for our breakfast in US dollars, in matter of fact
almost everything can be paid with that currency.
We continued along Orchard Road, window shopping here and there going
into stores to ask various questions about goods. The road is the retail and
entertainment center of the city-state and is popular with the locals as well
is a major tourist attraction. We passed the new Ion center which is rather
expensive, later realizing that it is not the new shopping center that is
expensive, but in general the prices in the city are such.
Our taxi driver, a born Singaporean of Chinese descends was extremely
friendly and volunteered to point out all kind of interesting sights.
Arriving at the “Sands Hotel” which is a city in itself, we walked through
the lobby, past the three towers, which accesses the various floors of
rooms and took the elevator to the roof gardens, with the famous
swimming pool.  We had a light lunch on the top floor.
Next day we decided to go to the Botanical Gardens. Originating from
Victorian times, the 74 acre garden has a large lake, many flower and tree
species that include an extensive collection of more than 250 types of
orchids. A short taxi ride to the front gate and the exquisite beauty one
sees is beyond words.  For hours we walked through these magnificent
gardens, not noticing the heavy clouds that gathered above us, and only
faintly hearing the rumbling of the approaching thunder storm. Only after
our legs had trouble carrying us, we headed for the exit and waited
patiently for a taxi to show up to bring us back to our hotel.
