San Marino
Arriving at Guglielmo Marconi airport, in Bologna (Italy)
Ruth & I were met, by a representative of The San Marino Amateur Radio
Society. It is the closest airport to San Marino, serviced by a variety of
airlines. We entered the bus, and made the 135 km trip to San Marino in a
little more than 1½ hour. We were there in November 2002, in conjunction
with the I.A.R.U. Region 1 Conference, we represented Israel at the
tri-annual conference, which San Marino hosted.
San Marino Republic, occupies an area of 60 square km, has a population of
about 28 thousand inhabitants.
It is a mountainous region, which culminates in Mount Titano. (750 m. above
sea level)
The country is carved up into 9 provinces, each one with its own history
dating back to the years before 1460. In that year San Marino was at war
with the overlord of Rimini, and aided by The Church with Pope Pius II, as
well as the King of Naples and the Count of Urbino, it added territory
which it is holding till the present.
