Bonaire
From Aruba we decided to take a couple of days off and fly to
Bonaire, another Dutch Island (See the Aruba story)
The day started very early, in matter of fact in the middle of the
night, we had a flight out of Queen Beatrix Airport to Bonaire at 07.00
AM. Tiara Air flight 3P 303, was an adventure all by itself.
Lining up at the check-in desk, we found that there are not many
passengers for this flight, but I didn’t pay much attention to this fact.
Later when I saw the aircraft I understood why there was no line at
the check-in.
After forty minutes we landed at “Flamingo International Airport”
We went through passport control, proceeded to retrieve our suitcases,
before we knew it we were standing outside the terminal.
Welcome to Kralendijk, the main city on the Island of Bonaire.
The Island is rather large but .... empty only fourteen thousand
inhabitants live there, very friendly people.
On the entire Island there are four gasoline stations as we found out.
Nature is just something else, Bonaire is known for its diving,
snorkeling and scuba diving and all other water sports. The most
beautiful colored fish live among the corals and you can swim with them.
The entire Island is beach front and coral.
Besides the tourist trade its main export is “ salt “ extracted from the
sea in huge salt pans which in turn house many “flamingo’s”. It is home to
one of the largest flamingo breeding grounds in the western
hemisphere over 10,000 birds.
