At 8.30 sharp all were present in the Insignia Lounge, we received seats in
bus number 2 and soon we were on our way the see “ The best of Buenos Aires
“ The guide was wonderful, young and full of humor.
Explaining the various sections of towns and told a short history of each area.
We stopped and saw at length the “Recoleta Cemetery, were among others
also the mausoleum stands of “Evita Duarte – Peron”. We saw and walked
around the “Plaza de Mayo“, location of the Presidential Palace, the Square of
“The Mothers” were Mothers protested the disappearance of their Son’s,
and the Cathedral of Buenos Aires.
Main avenues from here lead to the largest of them all the “Avenue 9 of Julio”
which it is said is wider than the “Champs Elise” in Paris.
From here our tour bus traveled in the direction of the area called “La Bocca
“on the way we saw the famous Bombonera football stadium -
home to the Boca Juniors.
Their official colours are blue and gold and even Coca Cola as sponsor had to
change their advertisement colours to match the teams.
Arriving in the “La Bocca“ area, we were of course warned about well, you
know by now, “watch your belongings” said the guide, as each one left the bus
and walked about the area. La Boca is a popular destination for tourists, with
its colorful houses and pedestrian street, the Caminito where tango artists
perform, and tango-related memorabilia is sold. Other attractions include the
La Ribera theatre, many tango clubs and Italian taverns.
This mornings object to walk the fashionable “Florida Street”.
To find a bank is the first order of the day to exchange all our left over
currencies to the Argentinean Pesos. It appears that without a passport one
cannot exchange money. Now with some local cash in the pocket, we started
down the long street. Walked all the way to Avenue de Mayo and looked for a
recommended place for lunch, soon we found “Café-Restaurant Tortoni” it is a
coffeehouse located at 825 of Avenida de Mayo in Buenos Aires.
Inaugurated in 1858 it is worthwhile to visit and the food is excellent.
Over the years the café has been visited by many renowned people including
politicians.
